How Long Do Cosmetics Last After Opening?
General guidance for common products. The expiry date or PAO symbol printed on your pack always comes first.
| Product | Typical time after opening |
|---|---|
| Mascara | About 3 months |
| Liquid eyeliner | 3 to 6 months |
| Liquid foundation | 6 to 12 months |
| Face cream in a jar | 6 to 12 months |
| Face cream or serum in a pump | About 12 months |
| Lipstick and lip gloss | 12 to 24 months |
| Powder products (blush, eyeshadow) | Up to 24 months |
| Nail polish | 12 to 24 months |
| Shampoo and conditioner | 12 to 24 months |
| Perfume | Often 3 to 5 years if stored well |
These ranges are common industry guidance, not rules. Heat, sunlight, wet fingers and shared use can shorten them. Sunscreen should be used before the printed expiry date.
How to Make Products Last Longer
- Keep them cool, dry and away from direct sunlight (not in a hot bathroom or car).
- Close lids tightly after each use.
- Use clean hands or a spatula, not wet fingers, for jars.
- Do not add water or saliva to products.
